Where Does Your Debris Actually Go in Mt Pleasant?

One of the most common misunderstandings about clearing a project is that it all goes to the same place. Not everything goes to one place

Household trash and recyclables

Household garbage goes to the City's curbside service or through Granger's collection. Recyclables, and for a fee brush, tires and oil, go to the Isabella County Recycling Center on East River Road. Those are for household material - they do not take a contractor's construction debris.

Construction debris and the C&D landfill

Construction and demolition debris - drywall, framing, flooring, shingles, fixtures - goes to a licensed construction-and-demolition landfill. The City of Mt Pleasant points residents with large loads to the Northern Oaks Landfill up in Harrison. It can't go to the recycling center, and Michigan's EGLE prohibits burning it. Clean concrete and recycling

Clean concrete, block, brick and asphalt can often be recycled or reused as fill rather than landfilled, often at lower cost. Clean scrap metal can be recycled too. Keeping a concrete or metal load clean and separate is what lets it go the cheaper route.

Electronics, brush and appliances

Several things route to their own place. Electronics - TVs, computers, monitors - go to e-waste collection through the Isabella Conservation District. Brush and yard waste go to the recycling center for a fee, and while Michigan allows brush to be burned with care, treated wood and construction debris can't be burned at all. Tires go to the recycling center for a per-tire fee, and appliances with Freon need the refrigerant recovered first. Household hazardous waste - paint, solvents, oil, pool chemicals - is barred from any container and handled through the Isabella Conservation District. Separating these at the source keeps a Mt Pleasant job both cheaper and compliant.
